Fall Photography Session Guide

So you've booked your session...

I am so excited to shoot your fall minis this year! But if you’re anything like me, you’re definitely wondering “What’s next?” Not to worry! I have created this guide to talk through a few things, and as always, am just a phone call or text message away!

What to wear?:

Consider coordinating your family's outfits in terms of color and style. Earthy tones like deep reds, oranges, browns, yellows, dark greens, or blues often work well in the fall. Always start with mom’s outfit and go from there. Even if it’s just a piece of an outfit, you can start to visualize colors and textures that might go well together. Layers, scarves, and hats can add texture and visual interest to your photos.

Remember, keep it comfortable – these are moments in your life. Keep kids in something they can move in. Make sure mom feels her most confident because it will show! And make sure dad isn’t feeling stiff in that one sweater, but he can pick up the kids (or mom!) and play just as much.

Some things to avoid:

·      busy patterns and logos

·      Neon colors

·      Matchy matchy. Matching outfits are cute for Christmas Eve, not for family photos. There should be some contrast in colors patterns and textures to make your pictures visually interesting.

Places to shop:

·      Old Navy, Target, Walmart, Kohls, Sophie and Trey, Banana Republic, American Eagle, Carters, Amazon, Pink Lily, Lulu’s, Red Dress.

What will our session be like?:

My goal is to capture moments in this season. I want to capture your family as they currently are. The love, the fun, and the chaos. I will take a few staged photos first so we get those out of the way and through the session I may provide input, but mostly, I want your family interacting like they normally would!

How do I prep the family:

For the kids, let them know that you’ll be going on an adventure! You can refer to me as Kirstin, K, or the photographer lady. Explain that we’re going to go have some fun and if you have too, bribe them with ice cream or toys (if that’s your thing!) They just need to know to relax and be cool and we will have a great time!

For Mom, relax! Go get your hair and nails done (if that’s your thing) and imagine your most confident stellar self. If you’re anxious of how everyone else will do it’s going to show. This isn’t the most important thing you’re going to do with your lives – or even that day (probably). There is no reason to stress at all

For Dad, Tell Mom how beautiful she looks and how much you appreciate that she scheduled this exciting shoot for your family to look back on. Love on mom and the kids as much as possible. Tell your best dad jokes and get everyone in a good mood!
